The effectiveness of fish feeding behaviour in mirroring trawling-induced patterns

The ability to observe and predict trawling-induced patterns at spatial and temporal scales that are relevant to inform realistic management strategies is a challenge which scientists have consistently faced in recent decades. Here, we use fish feeding behaviour, a biological trait easily impaired by trawling disturbance, to depict alterations in fish condition (i.e. individual fitness) and feeding opportunities. The benthivorous fish Mullus barbatus barbatus was selected as a model species. Diet and trophic niche of the invasive signal crayfish in the first invaded Italian stream ecosystem.

The occurrence of the signal crayfsh Pacifastacus leniusculus in the Valla Stream was the frst established population of this invasive species recorded in an Italian stream ecosystem. We evaluated the seasonality of diet and trophic niche of invasive signal crayfsh in order to estimate the ecological role and efects on native communities of the stream ecosystem. Growth and population structure of perch in relation to diet in a small humic lake, Valkea-Kotinen

Lake Valkea-Kotinen is a long-term ecological monitoring site in the Evo region of southern Finland .The aim of this study was to investigate the growth and population structure of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) in relation to diet in Valkea-Kotinen in order to provide reference data for a study investigating effects of increased loading of dissolved organic matter to nearby Lake Alinen Mustajärvi. Valkea-Kotinen was predominantly inhabited by small benthivorous perch. Trawling disturbance effects on the trophic ecology of two co-generic Astropectinid species

Physical disturbance by trawling can have both negative and positive effects on populations of scavenging benthic organisms. In the present study the impact of fishing activity on feeding behaviour of the two Astropectinids, Astropecten bispinosus and A. irregularis , was assessed based on stomach contents analysis. The study was carried out along trawled seabed highlighting the positive response of the two facultative scavengers to carrion generated by trawl disturbance. Gelatinous zooplankton, including jellyfish, ctenophores and pelagic tunicates, constitutes fragile marine animals that live in the water column, and represent an important resource for marine food webs through their seasonal pulses. Cannibalism is a taxonomically widespread phenomenon that can fundamentally affect the structure and stability of aquatic communities, including the emergence of a bimodal size distribution (“dwarfs” and “giants”) in fish populations.
